When it comes to looks, our dogs are each the cutest lil buddy on the planet. However, did you know that properly grooming your dog actually helps keep them healthy, too? It’s true, and we’re here today to give you our top 7 dog grooming tips for looking good and staying healthy.
1. Brushing:Your dog’s coat is one of the first things people notice, and it’s also a good indicator of health. When it comes to grooming, you want to make sure that you’re giving your dog a solid brushing/combing a LEAST once a week. This will help remove dead fur and skin cells, prevent mats that can hurt their skin, distribute their natural oils, and give you a chance to check them for hitchhikers!
2. Bathing:Bathing is a little more particular as far as how often it’s needed. The ASPCA recommends at least once every 3 months, but this will also depend on things like skin conditions or how often they play outside/how hard. Bathing too often will dry out their skin, as will using the wrong kind of products. Make sure you’re using a dog-specific shampoo/conditioner for the best results.
3. Teeth:Your dog has the cutest smile, so remember to take care of it! Dogs can get many of the same dental problems as humans, so brushing 2-3 times a week can help prevent plaque buildup, cavities, and gum disease. It’ll take some training, but getting your pup used to this process will save on vet bills in the long run.

4. Nails:Can you hear your dog tippy-tapping everywhere they go? Do they slip and slide on hardwood or tile? It might be time to trim those claws. Your dog’s nails are directly connected to how your dog walks. If their nails are too long, it negatively affects their paw and leg health. Check the nails about every 2 weeks as a baseline and trim when they’re getting unruly.
5. Feet:Speaking of your dog’s paws, you should be checking the health of their toe beans on a regular basis, too! Keep the fur in/on their paws trimmed to keep their feet healthy and safe from things getting caught or their paws from sliding.
6. Ears:Make sure you’re wiping out the inside of your pup’s ears about once a week, gently using a cotton ball or soft cloth with ear cleaning solution. Make sure you only go as far as your finger easily fits, or you could injure their ear. If you notice any weird smells or discharge, chat with your vet.
7. Eyes:Checking your dog’s eyes regularly will help you keep track of their health. Make sure they stay free of corner crusties that they match in pupil size/shape, and are clear of cloudiness. If you notice irregularities, it’s time for a vet visit.
